Competitive Audit Nutrition App

research

I conducted a competitive analysis of nutritional sites and recipe sites. I interviewed parents with children of varying ages and different food and shopping preferences. This was used to create personas, journey maps and prototypes which were used in usability studies.

Users want to find recipes, plan their food menus and organize their shopping. They would like to share their experiences with their children to teach them about nutrition.

persona

"Remembering what healthy foods I need to buy when I get to the grocery store is challenging"

Kris and her daughter enjoy cooking together and sharing meals. They also like to go to the farmers market and pick up fresh fruits and vegetables for the coming week.

Kris works remotely from home with the occasional trip into the office. She currently uses an Excel spreadsheet to track her grocery orders.

digital wireframe - shopping list

digital wireframes

The goal was to create a easy process to find recipes an create a nutritional menu that would then generate a shopping list. It was important to see how users built their menus and shopped for food. Then translate these preferences into the application.

mockups

The goal of this website is to allow the user to view their menu, then select their recipe and add the recipe to their menu. The user can then add their menus to the shopping list.

responsive designs

My goal is to present the information in a clear and concise fashion. By grouping information in a logical order and establishing a visual hierarchy the user will be able to easily complete their tasks.

what I learned

All of the participants were interested in eating healthy. Everyone had a unique way of creating their menus and shopping for food. It was very encouraging for me to find out how involved their children were in the selection and preparation of the family meals.

One of the tester was very excited about being able to generate a shopping list from their menu. This would be a tremendous time saver. They were also interested by tracking the nutritional values to their daily and weekly menus.
